Basel Grey kicks off the new year and the new decade with his debut single “Do You” chosen as the theme song for Africa’s Richest Race Day, this year’s Sun Met, hosted at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday the 1st of February.
This gem of a single has been enjoyed by the public since its release late last year, and will continue to make waves as the theme song at the prestigious event.
Grey first grabbed the attention of local fans when he was featured on various hit singles with Top SA DJ, Mark Stent, adding his soulful voice to “Come Back”, “Deep In” and “On Our Knees”.
This gave Grey the platform to take the bold step of writing and recording his debut single “Do You”. Grey explains how the single was picked up as the theme song for The Sun Met 2020 before its release to the public – “The Sun Met deal came about last August when I launched the song at Rockets Bryanston. It happened that the events and entertainment manager of Sun International was among the crowd. As I came off stage, I was asked to please send the track and a bio of myself through to them and two weeks later I got a call asking if I’d be interested in using the song as this year’s Sun Met theme song. It was an incredible moment! It’s a call I’ll never forget and an opportunity of a life time.”
Following The Sun Met deal, he released “Do You” in October last year through top indie label Gallo Record Company, and fans have been blown away by the track.
Grey’s soulful, husky voice is the opening of this afro house inspired track. But not to worry dance fans, the song soon builds into a comforting dance anthem, calmly yet energetically sending its message of authenticity and self love.
With lyrics like “Feel it in the air, raise them high”, the song is sure to inspire, put a smile on your face, and get those feet tapping.
The theme is a powerful one and Grey has taken a very personal angle to give this song so much heart and passion –
“‘Do You’ for me really is about being yourself, no matter how many people tell you not to be. Just ‘Do You’ is meant quite literally. The song, when writing it, really came from a place of constantly being bullied for being overweight and never feeling good enough or quite fitting in. It’s an anthem for people to remind themselves that as long as they know who they are and they are happy with themselves, then they should raise their hands, let go of any insecurities and that is when they will fly.”
And it seems that wiser words were never spoken, as 2020 is set to be the year for Basel Grey to fly.
The Sun Met 2020 could not have picked a stronger theme song for their event this year and Grey agrees saying “The Sun Met theme this year is African Visionaries and I feel the song ties in perfectly as I feel you cannot be a visionary without being your authentic self. It is then that you will stand out and your true vision will shine.”
Grey will take to the stage at The Sun Met, embracing the platform he loves the most – performing live.
“For any artist having The Sun Met Stage as a platform is a dream. Hearing the track on all the adverts all over the country and how perfectly it fits, you would say the song was created for the event and I could not be happier! To be opening the after party for some of the industry’s biggest players is something I could never have imagined. I am so excited for The Sun Met 2020 and cannot wait for what the day brings!”
Listen to Basel Grey and allow yourself to “Do You”.
