Playing around with a fun new sound, Jarrad Ricketts is excited to be releasing new music. Working once again with Mr Mallum, Ricketts recalls how this single – which also includes a collaboration – came about, saying “We worked together on my previous album ‘Break The Rules’ and forged a really good working relationship and creative process which keeps inspiring us to play the boundaries and create new sounds. The most memorable part of this collaboration was when we decided to jump back into the studio and create. We went through a few beats and needed to create the instrumentation …we tried many different options but couldn’t find the right instrument/sound, and so we decided to use Ebrahim’s voice as the riff …and it worked so well.”
Mr Mallum had just as much fun in studio with Ricketts, commenting “Collabing with Jarrad, sometime after the album, was exciting and refreshing after taking a little break. It’s always great working together because we feed off of each other’s creativity and the ideas just start to flow. Music comes together easily when we work together and that’s a great feeling.”
Taking a slight departure from his known Pop sound, ‘Mama I Made It’ delivers an energy and positivity that has always been a part of who Jarrad Ricketts is. “’ Mama I Made It’ is quite a different sound for me, and I’m really excited that I got the opportunity to think differently and to push myself as a creative. This song represents the fact that there are no rules when it comes to expressing yourself, and you don’t have to conform to what’s out there. Be unapologetically YOU.”
Ricketts has created an anthem for everyone who has persevered and pushed through these difficult and uncertain times, from the students at schools, business owners and frontline workers. 2020 was a challenge for everyone and it has followed most, if not all, into 2021 as well.
“With Mother’s Day coming very soon, I wanted to create a song that not only celebrated our achievements, but an anthem that also celebrates all the mothers who have supported, encouraged and instilled self-belief in all of us to know that we can be anything we want to be in this world!” and Ricketts truly understands the importance of a Mom.
During what was a hard 2020, Jarrad used the tough times to create his clothing brand “Testimony”. The launch last Winter was so successful, that Jarrad will be launching his second drop for the “Testimony” brand next. Not limited to just making music and developing successful clothing brands, Ricketts has done phenomenal work through his Foundation over the last couple of years and there’s even more to come:
“Through the Jarrad Ricketts Foundation, I am also launching a 2021 Robotics School Program launching in May! I will be collaborating with a few exciting institutions and companies to give children a seat at the table to be a part of the broader global robotics and IT industry. I spend a lot of my time engaging with youth through my motivational talks and am so grateful that I get to use my platform to help shape the minds, hearts, and future of our youth in South Africa.”
Ricketts has always understood the importance of the good work he does, looking after the well-being and education of the youth, and acknowledging your achievements. ‘Mama I Made It’ is another achievement that Ricketts can be proud of – he has collated a body of work over the years that has truly cemented him as one of SA’s finest and kindest musicians. Not forgetting the fans, he has a special message for all of them with this release:
“I want to thank my supporters for always standing behind everything that I do. I’ve walked this journey as an artist for 20 years …and there is still so much I want to do in this industry, and I am encouraged and driven by all the love that you all show me. I feel truly blessed to live out my dream every single day, and I get to do that because you like, share, follow and invest in my brand. I do not take this for granted because these have not been easy times for us musicians, and as much as I am always putting on a brave face, I am also experiencing anxiety and fear with all of you out there… This further stresses the importance of music in our lives to bring joy, smiles and upliftment – and I am so excited to have been back in the recording studio, to create new sounds that can become part of your 2021 playlist!”
